            No ka mea, ma kou Helu 31 o ka pule i i hala iho nei, ua hoakaka mai oe i na olelo e pili ana ia ʻ u a me ko ʻ u mau hoa, no ko makou hoole ana i ka hoololi i koiia imua o ka Aha Elele Kumukanawai, e pili ana i ka Pauku 3, o ke Kumukanawai hou, a ma ia hoakaka ana au, ua pakui hou iho oe me ka kapa mai ia ʻ u a me ko ʻ u mau hoa hoole hoololi, he poe oi aku o ke ino, a me ke kumakaia i na pono o ka lehulehu Hawaii, maka hoolaha nupepa ana, a me ke kamailio ana.

            A no ka pili nui o keia mau olelo ia ʻ u ka Elele o Lahaina, a me kou pakui pu ana i kekahi olelo i hooholoia e lakou, i me e hoike aku ai i ka lehulehu, a me ko Lahaina, i ka pono ole o ka hana a ko lakou Elele ; nolaila, e pono paha ia oe e lawe i keia olelo pane, i ike pu ia kau olelo a me ka ʻ u olelo pu hoi, no na kumu o ko ʻ u hoole ana i ka hoololi i noiia mai, e pakui ma ua pauku la.  Aka, mamua iki o ko ʻ u hoole ana, ke hai mua aku nei au, aole loa wau e mihi aku imua o ka lahuikanaka, i ko ʻ u hoole ana i kela hololi ; aole no hoi au e manao iki ana ia hana ana, ua ku e ia i ka Olelo Hooholo a ko Lahaina, i hoopukaia e oe ma kela apana olelo e pili ana ia ʻ u a me ko ʻ u mau hoa hoole hololi.

           Eia nae ka ʻ u ninau mua :  No ke aha la i ko ole ai ua Pauku hoololi la ?  A no ke aha hoi i holo ole ai me kona hoololi nani a hemolele ?  No ka mea, ua lilo hoi ka hapanui o na Elele ma ka aoao apono i kela Pauku a me kona hoololi ? Aka, ke pane aku nei au ia oe, aole ma ko makou hoole ana ka make ana o kela pauku, aka, ma ka hoole ana o ka hapanui o na mana iloko o kela Aha ; oia hoi, ua hoole na ʻ Lii, a ua hoole pu ka Moi : a nolaila, ina ua oi loa aku ko makou ino a me ko makou kumakaia ana i ka pono o ka lehulehu ; alaila, o makou pu me na ʻ Lii a me ka Moi ka i komo maloko olaila ; a ua lilo pu makou i poe ino loa, a ina e kapaia makou na Elele hoole hoololi he poe naaupo, o ka Moi kekahi, a me na ʻ Lii ; a, aole loa e hiki ia ʻ u ke ae aku ua oi io aku ko makou ino, kumakaia a me ka naaupo, e ka Moi a me na ʻ Lii, mamua o ka naaupo o kekahi o na Elele i apono i ka hoololi ana o ia Pauku :  a ua oi ole aku hoi ke ino a me ke kumakaia o ka Moi a me makou no ko makou hoole like ana.

           No kou hoopili pu ana i ka Olelo Hooholo a ʻ u i hoopuka ʻ i i ko Lahaina, me kou manao paha, ua ku e au ia Olelo Hooholo, nolaila, a pono no au e hoakaka maoli aku ia oe, i ke ano oiaio, a me ka manao maoli o ko Lahaina i pili i keia Pauku, mamuli o a Olelo Hooholo la :

  " Hooholoia.  E koho no kakou i mau Elele e like no me ka hoolaha ana, a i mea, a mau mea makaukau e hiki ai ke kokua i ka loaa ana o ia mau pono hou, me ka hoololi ole aku i na pono mamua i loaa ia kakou malalo o ke Kumukanawai a me na Kanawai o keia manawa e noho nei. "

           I ka hoomaopopo ana o ka Elele o Lahaina i ka manao o keia Olelo Hoholo, a me ka nana i ko lakou pono iloko o ka Pauku 3 o ke Kumukanawai hou, ua maopopo i ka manao o ka Elele o Lahaina, o ka apono ana i ka Pauku 3 i waihoia mai,  oia ka mea i manaoia e ko lakou Elele, ua loaa ka pono hou ia lakou, ke hoole aku i ka pakui ana i ka hoololi, e like me ka makemake o ka hapanui o na Elele i hooholo ai.

           No ka mea, ma keia Pauku hou a ʻ u a me ko ʻ u mau hoa i kupaa ʻ i ma ka hoole i ka hoololi ana, ua haawi aku makou i ka mana i ko Lahaina a me ka Lahui a pau e noho maluna o na waha e kamailio ana, a maluna hoi o ka poe e hoolaha nupepa ana ; aka, ma ka aoao hoololi i kela Pauku, ua hoole loa lakou, aole loa he mana iki o na makaainana, aole hoi o lakou makemake e haawi i ka mana i na makaainana e hooponopono a e kau i na Kanawai i kela manawa keia manawa a lakou e manao ai he pono, ke hiki i ka manawa a na makaainana e ike ai ua ku e loa i ko lakou pono a me ka ono o ke Aupuni, na olelo waha a me na olelo i hoolahaia ma ka nupepa.

           No ka ike ana o ka Elele o Lahaina,  aole ia pono i loaa mua ia lakou malalo o ke Kumukanawai, nolaila i hoole ai ka Elele o Lahaina a me kona mau hoa i ka hoololi i pakui ia mai. A no ka ike maopopo ana no hoi o ua mau Elele la, oia Pauku a me kona hololi, (ina e hooholoia,) alaila, ua like no ia me ka Pauku 3, o ke Kumukanawai kahiko, a aole hoi he wahi pono i loaa mua malaila, (koe na pono i haiia ma ka hapa mua e like me ke Kumukanawai hou,)  nolaila ka hoole ana la.  I mea e maopopo ai i ka lehulehu ke kumu hoole a me ka oiaio o na mea i hanaia, nolaila, e pono e hoolaha aku ka Pauku o ke Kumukanawai hou, penei :

           " Pauku 3.  E hiki no i na kanaka a pau ke olelo, a ke palapala, a ke hoolaha wale aku paha i ko lakou manao no na mea a pau, a na ke Kanawai wale no lakou e hooponopono.

           O keia ka Pauku o ke Kumukanawai, a ma keia Pauku, ua apono aku au a me koʻu mau hoa me ka pakui ole mai i hoololi, a ua maopopo no hoi ia makou aole i papaia na kanaka, aole hoi i hooneleia ko lakou mau pono ma ka olelo ana, palapala ana, a pai palapala ana, aole lakou e auhauia, no ia mau mea, aole hoi e papaia.  Aka, ina hana lakou a hooulu i na olelo wahahee,  hoolaha wahahee, a hoala paha i na olelo kipi, i kupono ole i ka pono o ka lehulehu, a me na mea ino loa, e honaakiuuki ai i na kanaka e ku e i ko lakou Moi, a i ke Aupuni, me ke kumu pono ole, oia ka makou i haawi ai i ka mana i na makaainana e papa a e hanai Kanawai e hoopololei ai i ka olelo a me ke pai palapala.  No ka mea, aole loa o makou manao e hoi aku i ka manao kekahi poe, a o ka poe paha a pau maluna o ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana.  Ua makemake makou i na hana a pau i hanaia e na kana e noho malalo ke kiai ana o ka mana kau Kanawai a na Makaainana, nolaila ko makou hoole loa i ka ae aku i ka hoololi i pakui ia mai mahope.  A mamuli o koʻu ano he Elele no Lahaina, aole au i ae aku e hoonele i kamana kau kanawai o na makaainana o Lahaina, maluna o ka olelo a me ke pai palapala, ka mana hoi i loaa ole ia lakou i keia mau makahiki he umikumamalua i hala aku nei.

            Aka, ma na mea i hoopukaia mai e ka poe kokua hoololi a hoole hoi i ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana, ua oleloia mamuli paha, no ka huhu a me ka opoino paha o na lala o ke Aupuni, e like me ko Farani, alaila, ina e aeia keia Pauku o ke Kumukanawai hou, me ka hoololi ole ia, e hoopilikia loa ia auanei ke pai palapala ana.

            I koʻu manao, ina e olelo oiaio na kanaka a pau, a ina e hoolaha na nupepa i na mea oiaio a pololei, aole loa oʻu manao ike e hiki i na makaainana ma ko lakou mana kau Kanawai e hoopilikia aku, a e keakea aku i ka pono o ka olelo a me ke pai palapala.

            O ka mana kau Kanawai o ka Lahuikanaka, oia ka mana i oi loa mamua o na mea a pau, oi hoi ke ola a me ka maluhia o ka lehulehu, aole hoi e manaoia i kekahi manawae hilinai ana a e hio ana ia mana mamuli o kekahi aoao wale no, aole mamuli o na hana a me na manao o ka Moi a me na lala o ke Aupuni, aole no hoi mamuli o kekahi kanaka hookahi a o ka lahui paha a pau.  Aka, ua kuokoa loa ka mana kau Kanawai, aole loa e hiki ke hanaia kekahi hana me ke kuleana ole oia mana e kiai a e hoomalu ia mau mea a pau.

            Nolaila, o ka hoololi i pakuiia mai, ua maopopo i ko makou manao, ua hookiekie loa ia ka olelo a me ke pai palapala maluna o ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana, a ua hoole loa ia ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana,  aole e hoomalu aku ia lakou, nolaila, aole makou i ae i ua hoololi la,  penei kela hoololi :

            " Aole loa e kaluia kekahi Kanawai e hoopilikia ana a e keakea ana i ka olelo a me ke pai palapala."

            Ma keia mea, e maopopo ia oe, o ka hoole ana o keia hoololi i ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana o Lahaina a me na wahi apau, oia ko makou hoole, no ka mea, aole ae iki aku keia hoololi i ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana e hana no, a e hoomalu no, ke loaa ke kumu pono ; aka, ua hoole loa ia na makaainana, aina no e olelo a pai palapala, a hoonaunaele paha, alaila, o ka hope maikai auanei ka haunaele, a o ka hoomalu pono anei ka hookahe koko, me ka makemake ole o na makaainana ia mea ino ?

            A ina paha e lilo ana ka makou hoole ana i kela hoololi i mea e hilahila ai a e kau ai na kiko eleele maluna o makou, a me ka makou mau mamo, no ke makou hilinai mau ana, a me ka hiipoi ana i ka hemolele o ka mana kau Kanawai o na makaainana ma keia mea, alaila, ke waiho pu aku nei me keia i ko makou mau kumu i hoole ai, i mea nana e hoomaemae aku i ua mau kiko la, a i mea e ike ai ka lehulehu, ua hoole makou malalo o na kumu i aponoia e ko makou Lunaikehala iho, me ka hio ole mamuli o ko hai kauo wale ana no kona pomaikai iho.

            Ua hoike maopopoia ia makou ma na moolelo i hanaia iloko o keia Aupuni no ka manawa i hala, ua ike makou, he kumu pono no ko makou hoole loa ana.

            Aka, ma ka la 28 iho nei, ua hoopukaia mai kekahi Pauku hou, a no ko makou ike ana, ua ano e ae ia i ko ka Pauku mua a me ka hoololi a makou i hoole ai, a ua loaa he wahi pono e like me ko makou kumu hilinai, nolaila, ua apono aku au a me koʻu mau hoa i ua Pauku hou la, i pani hakahaka no kela Pauku, a ua apono hoi na Mana Ekolu iloko o keia Aha ; aka, ina no i hoikeia mai e like me ka Pauku a me ka hoololi a makou i hoole muaʻi, aole loa no makou e ae iki aku ia Pauku.

            Me keia mau kumu, ke waiho haahaa aku nei au i kaʻu olelo pane, e like me ka ninau, penei : "Pehea keia e J. W. H. Kauwahi ?"

            Olelo pane aku ia Wahine.

 

            E ka Nupepa Kuokoa e ; Aloha oe : Ua makemake au e hoike aku oe ma ke akea ia Wahine o Kahala, i na owili bauda a ke keiki o Hawaii, e pau ai na opala ana i hoiliili ai ma ke kahua heihei o kona la haaheo ma ka Helu 26 o ka la 25 o Iune.  Aia malaila au i ike ai i na wahi anoano malili a na wahi kanaka hoe hewa o Kahuwa, i haukeke na lehelehe i ke anu o ka hau o Maunakea, ke kuululu la i ka pali o Kalalau, me ko laua manao iho paha.  aohe ahi nana e hoopau aku ia opala.

            Nolaila, auhea oukou e na hoa ame na makamaka, mai na kai ewalu ame na makani eha o ka aina e pae nei, aloha oukou.  No koʻu manao he poe oukou i aoia i ka noiau o ka ike ame ka naauao, nolaila, e nana mai oukou i ka Wahine mau olelo lalau, wahi ana, "Kuhi au he kanaka la ia ua aoia ?"  Pela kona manao kuhihewa, aka, ma koʻu nana ana i kaʻu mau olelo mua, ua maopopo e no i k lehulehu, he mea no au i aoia, penei e maopopo ai :  Hiki anei i ka mea i ao ole ia e kakau palapala, a e kalai manao iloko o ko kakou Kilohana ?  Aole e hiki.  No ke aha hoi ? Hai mai hoi oe e Wahine i kau haina ; no ke ao ia no, aole pela koʻu manao, no ke ao ole ia.  Pehea la o ka Aihue o Iole, hiki anei ia ia e kakau palapala, a e kalakalai manao iloko o ka Hiwahiwa Kaulana o Hawaii nei, me ke ao ole ia ?  Aole e hiki, no ka mea, aole ia i ao ia e like me Kaopuahikiahiahi nei, o ka mua ia o ko olua lalau.

            Eia hou keia,  "He kumuao ka oia no kana mau haumana ma aa hana pono ole a pau."  Pela kana pane ana ia Aiwohi, aole hoi ia S. A. K., ka mea nana i peku aku ma kona kua, ke nanai la i ka pali o Kalalau i ke-e ?  O Aiwohi, he kumuao io no oia no Ainakea, ua noho kumu oia i ka M. H. 1852 a hiki i keia la, aole i loheia ka pono ole o kana hana ana ma ia oihana, ina paha e hana ia pela, ina ua puehu kahiko loa, oia ka lua o ko laua lalau.

            Ke ha-u mai nei ka waha o ua mau hoa kalai manao nei oʻu, me he hoki la e ku ana ma ka puu panoa, e ha-u ana i ka makani, no ka nele i kahi mea paina ole,  "Ua kokua o Aiwohi i ka hula a me ke oli."  No koʻu hoike e ana aku i oʻu mau makamaka mai ka ua Kanilehua a ka welona a ka la i Lehua, aole o Aiwohi i kokua iki i ka hula a me ke oli, nolaila, he mea makehewa iaʻu ke kamailio hou no ia mea.

            Eia no, he umi ka laua hoike, a puehu aku ke kumamakahi a ka ole loa, e olelo ana,  "Ua kokua ole o Aiwohi i ka hula a me ke oli."  Ke makemake nei nae au e hele ae koʻu mau hoa me na hoike o laua imua o Aiwohi, ame kekaki poe e ae e hoike i ko lakou ike ame ka ole, i maopopo ai keia mea.  Ke lana nei koʻu manao, aole io laua e lawe mai ana i ko laua mau hoike e hoike i ka laua mea e kamailio nei, o ike ia uanei e ka lehulehu e nemo ana.

            Ke hoahewa mai nei iaʻu i ke kapa ana i ka inoa S. A. Kaopua, aia ka ka pono o S. A. Pahoa ; kahaha ! la laua ka ia wahi ! Na olua nae paha i hooholo iho ka pono  o keia mau inoa ia Hauailiki ame Kahanumoemalie o Kohala, e kau uei iloko o ke Kilohana ame na mea a ae he nui wale, he ino nae paha no ko laua mau kupuna mai, ma ko olua nana ana e Wahine ma, ame koʻu ame ko lakou la aku hoi, aole ia he inoa ohaua.  Heaha ke kumu o ko olua hoahewa  oleʻku ?  No ko olua ike ole no i ka hewa, pela no au, aole mamuli o ka inoa o kekahi keiki a Aiwohi koʻu kapa ana.

            Aia ma ka hapa hope a ko olua kalai manao ana, ke hoike hoopunipuni nei olua, penei :  "Aole i kokua o Naiapaakai i ka hula."  Auhea olua e na hoa, e kikoo i na maka o olua i ka laau, i ike iho a hoomaopopo iho na maka i ka nani, ka maikai, ka lenalena o ka lau o ke kukui o Edena, i kaʻu mau olelo i waiho akea ia aku imua o ka lehulehu, ma ka palahalaha o ke Kuokoa Helu 16, Buke III ; no kou hoopilimeaai anei mamuli o Naiapaakai, i loaa ka oihana aupuni ?  Ke loaa hoi.   Kaopua.

He wahi Moolelo iki no S. D.

            KEOLANNI I MAKE AKU NEI.

 

            Ua hanau e S. D. Keolanui ma Kohala, Hawaii, i ka A. D. 1825, he 39 kona mau makahiki mai ia manawa mai a hiki i kona la i hoi hou aku ai ma ka aoao mau o ka honua.  I  kekahi mau makahiki, ua noho haumana oia no ke Kulanui o Hilo, ua puka mai oia mailoko mai oia kula a noho i Kumukula ma Kohala.

            Ia ia i haaleleai ia oihana, ua komo aku oia maka Ekalesia Moremona, a hala kekahi mau makahiki o ka noho ana maia Ekalesia, ua hoi hou mai oia ma kona Ekalesia mua, me ka haalele aku i kona Ekalesia Moremona, ua komo nae oia ma ka berita o Kaumakapili, a oia kekahi o na luna o ka Ekalesia o Kaumakapili iloko oia mau la.

            Ma ka A. D. 1862, oia kekahi i hoolaha balota i Lunamakaainana, aole nae oia i hiki maia oihana kiekie, mamua ae oia wa, oia no ka Liona nana e hoeueu i ka hoopaapaa me ka Ekalesia Kakorita Roma, aoia no kekahi kanaka kukulu manao maloko o na nupepa, a hoopaapaa hoi me kona hoa paio me G. M. Koha ka eu o Keawaula, a oia no hoi kekahi mea haku-mele, a kakau Kanikau elike me ka naauao i piha ai oia.
