■ Both meetings on the Big Island were crowded and emotional. At the Waimea meeting, 125 people showed up and 17 testified. The commission seemed pleased. They asked constructive questions. One girl, who is only 9 years old, testified in Hawaiian! At the Hilo meeting, Mayor Matayoshi stated that the government should give the people what is theirs. The Hilo audience seemed split on whether reparations/restitutions should be land or money. I testified as a concerned Hawaiian. I spent 22 years as an American fighting man for Unele Sam.
