Aloha. 1 hope that some of your readers ean help in my search of discovering more about my Hawaiian relatives. On my father's side we are descendants of Hawaiians (who were known here in Canada as Kanakas) who eame to British Columbia to work on the fur trade or lumber industry. Many of them remained here instead of returning, and some of them were killed by native Indians too. My ancestor is George Apnaut who eame to the Fraser Valley with James MeMillan in 1824. There were other kanakas whose names are Nahu, Peopeo and Joseph Mayo, the half Indian son of Peopeo. By the 1870's George Apnaut was able to obtain 160 acres of land through our Homestead Act and he was elected to Maple Ridge Council in 1 879. One of the old timers recalls that he played the violin and his sister Mina. plaved the piano for dances in the early days when settlers created their own entertainment. There is even a creek here officially named Kanaka Creek whieh one person recalls hisfathershowing him the remnants of a stone foot path where the Kanakas used to pull up their canoes. I have enclosed two photos of mv Grandmother Wilhelimina (Kendrick) Maek (nee Apenaut or perhaps in Hawaiian it might be Apenui or Aponui?). I hope someone might recall the name or ha\e seen Dear Editor Office of Hawaiian Affairs: I wish to express a big mahalo from all of us here at Helena's for your very kind words about our Hawaiian foods restaurant. We were surprised at the number of old friends and customers that read your description of our ake and especially the art works by Jean Charlot. Keep up the good work. Mahalo from the Wahines of Helena's.
