"Interpret Hawaii" Starts New Classes

"Interpret Hawai'i," a statewide visitor industry training program at Kapiolani Community College. announces its new series of workshops for visitor industry personnel. Tour guides, escorts, hotel activity coordinators, docents — anyone who comes in contact with island visitors will find the workshops a lively, interesting way to learn more about their island home, and to make the story of Hawai'i eome alive for visitors.

All classes are held evenings from 7-9 p.m. (unless otherwise noted), at the Diamond Head campus of Kapiolani Community College, 4303 Diamond Head Road. To register for any of these courses or for more information, eall 734-9211. The workshop schedule is:

• Hawai i No Ka Oi — 40 hour workshop on how to tell the Hawai'i story with accuracy, enthusiasm and creativity. Covers natural and cultural history, interpretation skills and hospitality, plus field trips. Cost: $90. Meets Mondays and Wednesdays, in Iliahi 106. Session 1: Jan. 30-April 12. Session 2: April 17-June 28. • The Island Way: Discovering the Aloha Spirit — New six-hour course explores island values of open friendliness and eoneem that make Hawai'i so special. Examine how the "loeal style" of hospitality ean be shared with visitors from around the world. Cost: $20. Four sessions in Kokio 205 begin: Feb. 16, March 16, April 13, and May 11.

• A View From the Water — Unique and relevant information and insights on the coastline of O'ahu from Honolulu Harbor to Koko Head. Cost: $30. Dates: March 7, 14, 21, 28; in Iliahi 204. • Interpreting 0'ahu's Natural History — Geology, plants and animals of Hawai'i, oral histories of Hawaiians regarding the nature of their environment. Cost: $30. Dates: April 4, 11, 18, 25; in Iliahi 204.

• Interpretive Techniques: Enhancing Your Creativity — Leam how you ean turn a humdrum tour into a lively, effective experience with storytelling, "hands-on" involvement, questioning techniques, role-playing and the use of humor and drama. Cost: $20. Dates: March 15 and 16, in Mokihana 101.

• Discovering the Archives — How to open the rich resources of the Hawai'i State Archives to enhanee the way you present historic sites, family genealogy or cultural events. If you love old photographs and documents, this is an excellent opportunity to leam their uses from an experienced archivist. Cost: $20. Dates: February 2, in Mokihana 101. • What Do I Say Next? — Practical steps to develop your own unique style of tour. Whether you narrate tours or design them, this will be a useful opportunity to further develop your interpretive skills. Cost: $20. Dates: June 22 and 29, in Mokihana 101.
