OHA board approves nearly half a million in grants

ON FEB. 9, the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs approved 1 1 community grants totaling $425,428. Grant requests support activities ranging from immersion schooI bus transportation to outreach and case management for AIDS patients. OHA awards grants to non-profit organizations whose requests are for projects that will benefit Native Hawaiians. A portion of the interest earned by OHA's portfolio is set aside for grants consideration. "This grant from OHA will allow us to expand our

prenatal care program for expectant Native Hawaiian mothers," said Nieole Amorine, project director for Ke Ola Mamo, a native health care program. "Our program provides vital eduction and services to women in their first trimester, a critical stage in pregnancy. Our program has had a tremendously positive impact, and this grant from OHA will enable us to nearly double our current case load," Amorine said. OHA accepts grants roquests semi-annually, in September and April. The deadline to submit completed applications for the upcoming grants cycle is April 30. OHA grants approved on Feb. 9 are as follows: • Hina Malailena, $24,948, for a summer school program in Hāna, Maui; • Nā Leo Kāko'o o Maui, $16,287, for immersion students' bus transportation;

• Maui AIDS Foundation, $36,239, for outreach and case management; • Hawai'i Arts Ensemble, $25,790, for hula tour performances; • Anahola 4-H Club, $19,355, for playground equipment; • Ke Ola Mamo, $49,000, for a prenatal program; • 'Ahahui 'Ōlelo Hawai'i, $73,000, for an executive director and office assistants positions; • Moanalua Gardens Foundation, $5,000, toward support of the Prince Lot Hula Festival; • Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, $70, 029, for perinatal support services program; • Hawai'i Allianee for Arts Education, $41,800, for a hula ki'i program at immersion schools.
