"Second largest island in the Hawaiian group, 48 miles long, 26 miles wide, with an area of 728 square miles... The island was named for the demigod Māui." (PEM) At the time of the Māhele, the island was divided into 11 moku (districts): Kula, Hamakuapoko, Hamakualoa, Koolau, Hana, Kipahulu, Kaupo, Kahikinui, Honuaula on East Maui; Lahaina and Kaanapali on West Maui, plus the four independent ahupuaʻa of Waihee, Waiehu, Wailuku, Waikapu as the twelfth. In 1859 these were reduced to four districts "for taxation, educational and judicial purposes...": Lahaina, Wailuku, Makawao and Hana. See King 1935a.
