HIS NAME IS MUD.

-------

To the Editor of the National Herald:

DEAR SIR :- -I wish you to allow me to refer in a few words to the man qualified by the above head line, the leading orator of the so-called reform party at their meeting held at the Armory last Monday evening, viz: Mr. Wm. C. Wilder. The filthy, “mud slinging” and ungentlemanly villification which characterized his speech—which did not have even the extenuating feature of being an extemporaneous out-burst— has hardly ever been excelled in America or elsewhere. But that his vulgar diatribe was interlarded with frequent applause by a presumably intelligent and respectable audience —in fact the elite of the reform party—is a disgrace to the citizens of Honolulu and shameful parody on the word “reform.” Who is Mr. Wilder that he dares thus to sit in judgment on his fellow-men ? If his character is to be judged by his speech, he is unfit for the high position of a Noble of this Kingdom to which he aspires; and it is a reasonable presumption that but for the affluence he has acquired through his brother’s indomitable energy, he would still be working for less wages than our dock laborers get.

His attack upon the personality of every candidate of the National Reform party—as the utterance of his own rude and untutored self, would be unworthy of further thought or notice; but coming from an acknowledged and respected (!) leader of a party which claims to be the only clique that knows how to behave themselves and how to conduct Hawaiian affairs, it calls for this comment, that if this be a sample fo their general behavior it will be far better for the whole community, that this clique be utterly crushed and annihilated. Whatever may be the politics, the public want as the elect of the people, gentlemen.
