the Bulletin’s unwieldy endeavor to exonerate the secretary from ascendancy and supremacy winds up with an admission of the same fact. In our criticism “truth and justice have not been outraged.” Truth may exist without falling under the Bulletin’s perception. Our sources and facilities for correct information are absolutely more reliable than those of the Bulletin and our sense of justice quite as keen. The matter is not a campaign issue or we would now produce facts in contradiction of our rival’s opinions, as we shall when the matter properly comes up.

“THE SILENT OPPOSITION.”

            The imported talent of the Advertiser concentrates itself on an editorial entitled “Silent Opposition.” The whole fury of the government attack has been directed against native Hawaiian candidates. The organ cannot discuss issues abstracted from personality. Failing to find weakness in the National Reform party’s platform it howls against the native nominees. With a blind prejudice resulting from years of bigotry it seeks to attach all sins of omission and commision of these nominees to each and every candidate running on the National Reform ticket. Accordingly it drags up such silly themes as the Samoan Mission, knowing very well that such an embassy would be an impossibility with any future government. The organ of perversion also knows that the former government and not the appointee was responsible for the Samoan fiasco. Still it will harp on such silly strains. It is a feature of its disingenuous tactics to argue issues that are dead and have no bearing on present events. It decries prejudice and claims a monopoly of all appeal to it,

 

            The organ dismisses Mr. Widemann’s discussion of the French subject by investing it with a certain “antiquarian interest.” Will the Advertiser remember that Mr. Widemann’s oration is a reply to a theme introduced by Mr. Thurston and if “anitquarian interest” ataches to his remarks it is probably the interest of truth which Mr. Thurston conveniently omitted.

 

            The criticism of the other speakers is what might be expected of an organ which has such enlightened views of “burning questions.” It compliments Mr Macfarlane for his materly exposition of National Reform principles and then innocently wonders why Mr. Macfarlane does not form one of the compact devotees. Mr. Phillips, in the estimation of the enlightened journal, has no right to criticise the government’s extravagance in the matter of electric lights and its parsimoniousness in the construction of roads, because he sits by the side of a former Ambassador to Samoa.

 

            The folly in argument of the Advertiser always terminates with an absurd conclusion as a climax. This time the organ calls the opposition silent because it does not discuss the topics which the Advertiser considers “burning questions.” Know, most venerable fossil of journalism, that both the National Reform platform and its candidates have distinctly pronounced on all “burning questions” and real issues.
