TOMATO CROP IS INJURED BY BLIGHT

A remedy to combat tomato blight has been recommended to farmers at Kapoho by Dr. Suteichi Wakabayashi, plant specialist with the University of Hawaii agricultural extension service, who was a visitor there Wednesday.

In making his rounds, Dr. Wakabayashi discovered a blight, which was hurting the tomato growers. He advised farmers to rotate crops and gave them a formula of a mixture to disinfect the seeds before planting.

Dr. Wakabayashi distributed seeds of a disease resisting variety of watermelon to farmers there. This variety of watermelon was developed by the University of Iowa and has been proved disease resisting in that state. The melon is being planted in Kapoho for experimental purposes, to see if it will also resist disease in Hawaii.
