"Kaluaopela was a prophet of Pele, one of three most disinguished; his name was taken from Ka-lua-o-Pele, changed to Kaluaopela for euphony. He had gathered together in this cave a great many relics of Pele, Kalaipahoa, Kamohoalii, etc. Kalaipahoa the man-eating god was the chief diety of the place; his parcel of relics represented his body. Kaluaopela, his master, would send him on errands of slaughter; he would fly from the cave like a rocket. Therefore the name: Flying Cave."
