EX-DETECT1VE WAGNER S TALE OF A NIGHT. j L An interesting >ton* iā tol«l by er-detective Wagner’ and whieh, after being redaced to the langn «ge of Eng’Uh-speaking people, rnns somewLat as foIlows; '• Yon know, of coorse. of the manv troables whieh I have on mv miel. and yon know that I am a detective (?) who fears nothing, hnt tronb!e. Well, ray miud was veiy uueasy lastFriday evening. and after I went to mv lone cabin and cooked my sopper, I could not rest. 1 tried to read Shakspeare. but not having a copy in German. I did not do it. Well, it eame to 10 o’eloek and as there was no moon I thought I would rode out of town, AVaikiki way,as I like the dark. I went out towards Diamond Head feeling perfectlv safe, as my charger was strong and good, and my trnsly gun was sluug ovor my shonlder. But, hark! S"imds from seaward. My eyes cut the the deep gloom whieh hangs over sea and shore and I see, a boat, two meu rowing and they reach tbe shore. Other sounds are heard but to whieh ī give but little notico. Ha’ the meu eome toward me! I hide. Aud now whut do I see? Do rav eyes deceive? No! there are the men bending ; nnder heavy loadsof oplum! One trip, two trips, three tripa they make: opium every time. A wagon approaches, the opimn is placed therein; the boatmen depart and are lost in the raist of the sea. But, hah! how bappy I felt at the thoughtor the surpriso ■ whieh my presence would give to the smugglers who held tho wa gon. Ha! h;i! ha! little did they know that ‘Wagner the daring detectivo’ was near tbeiu. Methoiight, m>j time has eome and on tho menow the A?arshal and his men and the newspapers, will all ring ray praises. jSlowly and carefully I eame from cover. I reached the road and—‘Hold up your hands! was an ordor whieh greeted rae aud I obeyed. Thero iu thegloom with sliotguus cocked and pointed at my heart, with murder blazing from the eyes whieh peered through the masked faces, stood two mon, about 10 feet eaeh in higbt, and Aveighiug about a ton. What passed after w irds, is liko a dream, the wagon wont through a hole in the oarth, the mon dissolved into the midnight dew, and I. I was alone. My head ached on Satnrday, bul I reportod tbe mattor just the same, and it wil; be investigated I hope to get the job of investigation.”
