SUCCESSOR TO VALENTINE

Dudley Evans May Accept the Wells Fargo Presidency. SAN FRANCISCO. Jan I.—'The hoard of directors of Wells. Fargo & Co., will meet at an early date to elect a successor to the late J. J. Valentine, president of the company. Dudley Evans, se«-ond vice-president and manager of the Atlantic division of the company, is thought to be in line for the place. Homer S. King, however. has many supporters, and the contest is between the two. First Vice President Gray is 83 years old, and while ■*. most competent officer, his age will probably be a bar to his advancement to the higher office. King has had charge of the banking business of the company, while Valentine gave his attention to the express business. This may be a reason for the selection of Evans to succeed Val-' entine.
