Waikiki, My Qa«tle by the Sea

' Na ka Brothers Cazimero Mountain'Apple Gompany, Ine.

"Waikiki" is a very nostalgic, romantic eombination of traditional and contempory songs. The sound is a niee blend of .jazz, rock and Hawaiian music complemented with the rich harmonies of the Brothers Cazimero. This recording seems to the cumiMation of styles J;hey have presented in previous recordings, including the latest, "Pele." Inaddition, the use of the piano, an instrument used by few Hawaiian musicians, takes a major role and has great effect. The arrangements demonstrate the finese of their musical abilities even provoking our, imaginations as if the songs were fo?,the theatre o? television. However, at times spme songs totter betwaen a break through in creativ,e artistry andbeing flatly overdone. It is their soUd background. in music and know r ledge of Hawaiian music that pulls them back before stepping over this fine border line distinction. The performance and articulation are generally elean and clear, and the layout of songs is a superb balance. AU ofthis is very indicative of the amount of labor and love put into thb production of this album. But, the jacket is a dis~ appointment if it is to eAhanee all this effort. It lacks liner notes to help us further appreciate such a fine recording. Equally distressing is the plight of those who do not understaud our language and may miss appreciating the beautiful lyrics to songs lpee "Ka wai lehua 'a'ala ka Honua" or the tf ßainbow.Connection." After aliis Robert singing the same lyric& as the Muppet frog, Kermit, or are the words even better in Hawaiian? ... i ka pi'.o o ke anuenue Na kakou e 'ike the Rainbow Coiuiection Ke aloha e pi'o mau ai. ...
