April niarked the beginning of an exhibition featuring the ukulele and the Hawaiian pahu and puniu drums. The exhibition's opening celebration featured performances by some of Hawaii's best ukulele artists and authorities on Hawaiian chant and dance. Two newly released books were made available for the first time, "Pahu and Puniu; An Exhibition of Hawaiian Drums, M by Adrienne L, Kaeppler, and "The Ukulele, A Portuguese Gift to Hawaii," by John Henry Felix, Leslie Nunes and Peter F. Senecal. The exhibition contains about twenty ukulele and a koa guitar made by some of the first Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii. The craftsmanship of Manuel Nunes, Leonardo Nunes, Augusto Dias, and Jose De Espirito Santo are well represented. Kou, Koa, Naio, Spruce and Ebony woods as well as pearl shell inlay and ivory are used in the construction of these finely made instruments. Many date prior to 1930 and some to the 1880s and 1890s. Other instruments repfesented in the showing are made by Jonah Kumalae, Antone Abrew and Sam Kamaka. Some.of the first ukuleles made by C.F. Martin and Company and Gibson Ine. are ih the exhibit. A "centenial" model ukulele designedby Leslie Nunes and constructedby Eric Kingsbury in 1979 is.also on display. The Pahu exhibit features drums collected from all over the world and represents the largest gathering anywhere. Included in the exhibit is Naniualoa, a pahu whieh onee made its home ln the heiau of Kamehameha I. Anothe;r interesting pahu is one on loan from New Zealand's Canterbury Museum whieh features carved figures. About 40 pahu and puniu are represented in the exhibit. The night's entertainment featured opening chants by Kalena Silva Kaupena Wong. Kathy DeSilva performed a Hula Pahu specifically for the evening. It was composed Jby Mary Kawena Puku'i for her daughter Pele, and was done in honor of the snow goddess. Other performers included Hoakalei Kamau'u and members from her halau. Leslie Nunes, great grai\d-son of one of Hawaii's first ukulele craftsmen presented the ukulele poilion of the show, along with John Felix, Portuguese Consulate anei Peter Senacal co-authors of the books, u The Ukulele," and "The Portuguese in Hawaii." Herb Ohta performed Sanoe and Kanakawaiwai on a 1910 style "eeniennial" model ukulele made by Eric Kingsbury. Also performing on ukulele was one of Hawaii's entertainment greats, Andy Ciimmings. Among the songs played was one (|f his most famous compositions, Waikiki. ~ The exhibition is inthe Kahili Room of the Bishop Museum, and will be open to ihe public until September. Wayne Washburn
