In a unique setting, ! the Volcano Art Center at Kilauea, Hawaii with the cooperation of the Naiional Parks Service is establishin£ a special area for the performance of traditronal hula fhula kahfkoJ. The designated area is in the midst of a younggrove of koa trees near the Art Center, UnjJer the supervision of Boone Morrtson of the Art Center, and two hula fnsmictors Nalani Kanakaol/of the Art Center and Kepa Maly of thē National?lPark Service a raised p!atform huilt with hoehot4ava walls and a f!oor of smooth pebbles has heen coinpleted. They hope to 1

have two traditional buildings made for the use of visiting hula groups: one for preparation of shows "and the other for instruction. The surrounding area.is. being planted with plants related to the hula so performers maybe able to use the plant material In traditional offerings and leis. The plants, such as lehua and palapalal ferns, will be free from the National Parks' restrictions of prohibiting picking iu the park area. When the project is completed* Jfo&_ the hula styles of the Bis Island, will " flourish through the many performances done there.
