English Column.

A New Years Greeting

To all the Friends of the Kuokoa.

After a year's very pleasant experience in the editorial chair, we enter upon the year 1866 with hope and confidence. We are dependant however on our patrons for a circulation and for money. We bespeak the good will and assistance of all who deem our paper an aid in the upward progress of Hawaii nei. It will be our purpose, as hitherto, to weekly furnish at least a few items of news in English, but our main effort and labor must be expended on the Hawaiian.

Late News Items.

The amendment to the Constitution of the United States has been lately ratified by the Legislatures of North Carolina, Alabama and Georgia, which makes up the number of 26 states that have ratified it, or three fourths of all states. It has therefore become part of the United States. The result is that in all the states slavery is forever abolished.

In Kentucky Gen. Palmer was tried for having given passes to negroes to go north, and thus having violated the slave laws of that state. The final result of the trial was that the judge, Johnson, declared that slavery in the state of Kentucky had been abolished by the above mentioned amendment to the Constitution of the U. S. A. and therefore Gen. Palmer was acquitted. Hereupon Gen. Palmer issued a proclamation to all the negroes in the state, telling them that they were free, and advising them, if any one hindered their freedom to go where they pleased, to bring suit in the civil courts. There is great excitement in Kentucky.

The Rebel States.

There is still a great deal of rebellious feeling in the South. It is reported that the Virginia Legislature, has passed a resolution to ascertain the value of property destroyed in the state during the war, and the value of the slaves in the state at the time of Lincoln's emancipation proclamation, with the intention of demanding Compensation from Congress. It is also said they are turning out Union men, and appointing rebels to office.

Johnson, the military governor of Georgia has been ordered by the President to retain his office, without regard to the lately elected governor. He is also ordered not to give certificates of election to Georgia Congressmen. This is on account of the rebellious spirit shown by the Georgians. Their Legislature has elected Alexander Stevens, the late Rebel Vice-President, as United States Senator, although he has not been pardoned by President Johnson. Great cruelty is practiced throughout the South towards the negroes. They are shot down for the most trifling provocation.

The Fenians.

The Fenian society is split into two parties, each swearing vengeance on the other. Stevens, the head of the Fenian Society in Ireland, was captured and imprisoned in Dublin, but escaped by the aid of some of the government officers. It is reported that he has reached Paris. Lubey, the editor of a Fenian news-paper in Dublin, has been tried and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

Revolt in Jamaica.

The rebellion of the negroes in Jamaica did not extend over the whole island but only a small part. It was put down without mercy. More than a thousand rebels have been hung and many others severely flogged. In one town then was fear of pestilence from the stench of the dead bodies.

Mexico

In Mexico the French have abandoned Chihuahua, the North Eastern District the Mexicans boast that they have 25000 men in arms.

Chile and Spain.

Seven of the principal ports of Chili are blockaded by the Spanish navy ; but it is said the fremer as get suffer little inconvenience. Spain is pushing on the preparation of war vessels. The British and French governments will look after the interests of their subjects in Chile.

Roma.

Ua ike ia iho e hoopukaia ae ana he palapala ma Roma, e kahea ana i na Bihopa a pau o ka aoao Pope ma keia ao, e hui no ka makahiki Iubile, no ka hoomanao pu ana hoi no ka make ana o Petero ka Lunaolelo.
