@@@@ of May @@

Official dispatches state that on the morning of May 15th a portion of the defenses of Queretaro was taken by the Liberal forces who surprised thee enemy, and that in a few hours afterward Maximilian surrendered unconditionally. General Escoledo reports he has received orders form President Juarez to shoot Maximilian and the Generals taken with him. The Literal forces hi@hetto be@@ging Queretam have started for the capital. It is stated that Juarez, in his answer to the request of our Government to spare the life of Maximilian, recounts the atrocities committed by the Imperialists, justifies previous executions of prisoners, and declines to guarantee the safety of Maximilian, in case of his capture.

The trial of Surratt has been postponed until the 10th of June, in order to secure the attendance of important witnesses. The first section of the Western Pacific Railroad has been accepted, and a patent issued for the land granted.

General Griffin, commanding in Texas, has suspended the collection of taxes levied during the war. They seem to be somewhat ignorant of their situation down there, as the Judge of a District Court refused to admit negro testimony, and the Sheriff of Victoria county does not believe greenbacks to be legal tenders.

The managers of the St. Louis street railroads have resolved to admit negroes to equal privileges in their cars. Gen. Sickles has released all save two of the freedmen engaged in the Charleston street car riot.

The people of Kansas are suffering from the outrages of organized bands of outlaws. One of a party pursuing the Richmond bank robbers was killed by a notorious bushwhacker, who escaped.

Several fights have occurred between men cutting timber for the Pacific Railroad and Indians.

The English Government has decided to commute the death sentence of convicted Fenians to imprisonment for life.

The English National Reform Union have asked Gladstone to support household suffrage, but he refuses to commit himself to so radical a measure.

The Danish Government denies that any negotiations have been had with Prussia relative to the retrocession of Schleswig-Holstein.

From Sac. Weekly Union, May 25.

Jeff. Davis arrived in New York on the night of the 15th. Precautions were taken to prevent any mobbing demonstrations, but there was no excitement. Jeff. puts up at the Southern rendezvous, the New York Hotel. He was to proceed, without much delay, to Montreal.

The laborers employed by the city Government of Chicago petitioned to have the ten hour system restored, as they were not able to stand the reduction of wages. They are now working ten hours a day. The eight hour movement in Chicago seems to have failed to realize the benefits which were expected to flow from the passage of the bill though the Legislature.

Correspondence of the New York Herald, dated at Constantinople, April 20th, says Russia is encircling the Turkish Provinces with large bodies of troops and there is an immense number at and near Odessa. It appears that the "sick man" will soon be called to account.
