The act to mitigate the eveil of Independent Schools, as applied upon the Island of Kauai.

{illegible} {illegible} {illegible} {illegible} {illegible} {illegible} {illegible} During the last week of September, two parents of Anahola, Kauai received chastisement in the shape of a fine from the District Jusdge of that part of the island, for the heinous {illegible}of aspiring to have their children {illegible} independent school, whitout a {illegible} the Government common school teacher of Koolau, Kauai, where their children had previously attended. We are at a loss to know where the Judge {illegible} the law {illegible} a fine for parents who might aspire without permit and by the generous expenditure of their own means, to {illegible} a more liberal education for their children then is offered by the Government common schools. {illegible} the documents {illegible} {illegible} Government press that it would be safe to fine the parents. He certainly can find no {illegible} provision in the law. We {illegible} under the professedly zealous {illegible} of education, our present Administration {illegible} state of mind in our {illegible} the middle of the nine, {illegible}parents for the offense of withdrawing the children from the government {illegible} and sending them where they may pay for a better education. We move for the early repeal of a law which {illegible} plainly by its own terms is {illegible} only to government school teachers {illegible} as we see in the instance, be made the {illegible} of oppression. And we shall work for the removal from offoce of an Adminitration under whose anti-educational regime {illegible} acts of oppression can with impunity be perpetuated.
