            "O oe paha kekahi makaikiu ike ole aʻu i ike ai.  Ua hiki oe ke hukihuki wale ia ma ka ihu a alakaiia aku i kahi e hiki ai ke lilo aku kou ola, e like iho la me kou alakaiia ana mai la a paa iho la oe iloko nei o keia lumi."

            "Owau ke ae ole ana e hoopau ae i keia mea," wahi a Wete i pane aku ai.  "Ke manao nei no hoi wau ua hiki ia oe ke hana pu mau me aʻu."

            "Heaha ia ano hana?" i ninau aku ai o Keaka.

            "He hana no hoi e like iho la me ia au i hana mua iho nei."

            "Pehea e hana aku ai?"

            "He uku hou i haawiia ai e hana mai i keia hana maluna oʻu?"

            "Pela io no, a no kekahi manawa wale no, ina nae e hiki ana."

            "Alaila, e pepehi iho olua iaʻu a make, oia anei?"

            "Ua loaa mai la ka mea oiaio ia oe."

            "He uku kiekie no hoi ko olua i haawiia ai e ko olua mea nana i hoohana mai?"

            "Ua pololei kau i koho mai la."

            "Owai o olua ka mea nana i kukakuka a hoonohonoho pu i keia hana?"

            "O Ke-pa."

            "E kii aku oe a e wehw ae iaia, ina nae oe e oluolu ana, a mahope aku e noho iho no hoi kakou a kamakamailio pu i na mea e pili ana i keia hana a olua i hoohanaia mai ai.  Ke manao nei wau e hiki ana no iaʻu ke kuhikuhi aku ia olua i kekahi alahele e loaa ai he mau dala mahuahua ia olua me ka nui ole o ka hana a me ka hana ole no hoi ma ko olua aoao.  Pehea, ke makemake mai la anei olua i keia?"

            "E hoao mai oe ia maua."

            "Ua ike anei oe i kekahi mea e pili ana no keia kanaka, oia hoi o Ivana Horawiki, au hoi i kamailio iho nei i na mea e pili ana iaia?" i hoomau aku ai o Wete i kana ninaninau ana.

            "Aole loa aʻu mea i ike ai nona."

            "Nau no anei e hele aku ana e hoike aku i keia wahine i na mea apau e pili ana i keia hana a olua i manao iho nei e hana mai maluna oʻu?"

            "Ae, i keia auwina la no."

            "Ihea oe e hoike aku ai iaia?"

            "I kona hale no."

            "Ua ukuia anei olua mamua no keia hana?"

            "He hapa wale no, a o kekahi hapa aku mahope o ka pau aaa o keia hana."

            "Aole no nae oe e haalele iho i keia wahi a hiki i koʻu hoi ana mai."

            "No keaha hoi?"

            "Mai ninau mai oe i kekahi ninau.  Aole anei ina e uku aku a naʻu hoi ke kauoha, he hoolohe wale mai no hoi ka olua?"

            "Ua pono oe," wahi a Keaka i pane mai ai, e hoonaukiuki ana hoi i ka Ke-pa ninau hoohuahualau.

            "Aia ke manao nei____>" wahi a Ke-pa i pane mai ai, i ka manawa a Keaka i kahamaha aku ai iaia:

            "E hoopaa oe i kou waha, e Ke-pa!  He nui kou hoolalau ma keia mau mea, a ua hiki mai ka manawa nou e hoopaa ai i kou waha."

MOKUNA XLVI.

NA KE-PA ELUA.

            I mea e halawai ulia ole ai ua Wete la a kaua me Kaunawahine Sofia nolaila o ka hana mua ma kona aoao i kona manawa i puka aku ai mawaho o ke alanui a laua i komo mai ai, oia no kona hele ana aku i kahi keena ona maluna ae o ka hale inu rama.  Malaila oia i hoololi ai i kona helehelena, alaila hoi aku la oia e ike ia Vera.

            I kona manawa no i hoike aku ai iaia iho ia Vera, o ka pa koke mai la no ia o ka ninau:

            "He meahou anei kekahi i loaa mai nei no Ivana?"
