TRUSTEES ADDRESS STUDENTS

Over the past several months OH A Trustees have been in demand as speakers before a variety of highschooland University classes and organizations. Back in February, Trustee Walter Ritte spoke to a group of Jefferson Fellows at the East-West Center. The Jefferson Fellowship program is an annual program whieh brings established journalists from Asia and the United States together in Hawaii, the Mainland and Asia for several months of eaeh year. Ritte gave this gathering of influential journalists a unique insight into the Hawaiian movement. In April, Ritte met individually with two students doing term papers for their Hawaiian Studies class at St. Louis High School. He spent about an hour with them and provided a complete rundown on theorigins of OH A, its goals and programs. A group of Maui students participating in the Upward Bound program on the Valley lsland visited the OHA office in mid-February. Upward Bound works with dis-

advantaged youngsters who demonstrate a potential for higher education. Following a slide show presentation, OH A staff members Ben Henderson and Steve Kuna gave an overview of the Office's activities and responsibilities. Trustee Gard Kealoha has spoken before several student groups since ourlast issue of Ka Wai Ola O OHA. His most recent appearance was in March when Kealoha was the featured speaker at an evening adult education class at Kalaheo High School in Kailua. The Hawaiian History class isdivided about evenly between loeal people and military. Trustee Rockney Freitas stressed the importance of education for Hawaiian youngsters and the necessity of working for change within the system during his appearanee before a minority studies class at Hawaii Baptist Academy in March. Freitas also reviewed a bit of Hawaiian history, traced the evolution of OHA, and answered questions from the students.
