PROJECTS BEING PLANNEŪ TO BETTER YOUR HEALĪH

Beginning in 1982, under the direction of Chairman Tommy Kaulukukui, the Heahh and Human Resources Committee of OHA has sought to discover what problems are confronting the health of Hawaiians. After extensive research and with the assistance of other agencies' studies, it was determined that there are three lethal diseases particularly affecting the heahh of Hawaiians: cancer, hypertension/heart ailments, and alcoholism. The Office has begun several programs in cooperation with various agencies to combat those diseases. OHA is working with the Cancer Institute in their research on the high ineidence of cancer among Hawaiians. An educational program has been started to inform Hawaiians of the dangers of

high salt intake in foods that Hawaiians eat the most. As for a project on alcoholism, through the kokua of Mr. John Dominis Hoh and the Hawaiian Cultural Research Foundation, a pilot program is being put together with OHA to help Hawaiians who have a problem with aleohol. This project will be conducted utilizing the Hina Mauka staff and its facilities. Serious cases will be selected for this program and it is hoped that the results will help form the basis for a long term program, perhaps funded by the Federal government. Those who are interested in this project or have any questions should eall Harry at Hina Mauka (235-4531) or Kamuela at OHA (548-8960).
