HAWAII TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FOURTH FESTIVAL OF PACIFIC ARTS

As a member of the Council of Pacific Arts, the State of Hawaii will be sending a delegation of performing and visual artists to the Fourth Festival of Pacific Arts in Noumea, New Caledonia from December 8-22 of this year. Since 1972, the Festival of Pacific Arts has been held every four years as a two week pageant of native performing arts displays and demonstrations of crafts, both traditional and contemporary. The Festival has grown to be an event of great cultural and geographic importance in the Pacific where islanders ean better understand eaeh other's culture, have an opportunity to discuss with eaeh other the important issues for future protection, enhaneement and development of Pacific culture.

Hawaii participated in the Second Festival at Rotorua, New Zealand and at the Third Festival in 1980 in Papua, New Guinea under the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage. In 1982, Hawaii was admitted as a member of the Council of Pacific Arts, whieh governs the operations of the Festival. The Governor has designated the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to coordinate the efforts in organizing a delegation to represent Hawaii. The State's delegate to the Council is Keahi Allen, the Executive Director of the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs, through the Culture Division has taken an active role in working with the State Foundation in this long term endeavor.
