Hawaiian Language Tape by Kupuna Now Available

"Ka Leo O Na Kupuna," (The voice of the elders) isa just completed Hawaiian language educational cassette created by members of Ka Leo O Na Kupuna ine., a non-profit educational organization. The tape is a result of their recognition of the need for more materials to support the enrichment, preservation and perpetuation of the Hawaiian language. It was designed for children in kindergarten through second grade and those persons not familiar with the Hawaiian language.

The tape includes sections on Pi'apa (Hawaiian alphabet); Na Helu (numbers in Hawaiian); Na Waiho'olu'u (colors and body parts). It also includes a discussion on the word Aloha and three stories — The Menehune; The Shell Canoe; and Tutu and the Fishpond. The project was funded by a grant from the Native Hawaiian Rehabilitation Fund of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands with technical assistance by Alu Like ine., Oahu Island Center. Rick Scudder, Alu Like community specialist, was the project director.

Ka Leo O Na Kupuna ine., is a Hawaii non-profit corporation organized for educational purposes, including through educational means the: • Enrichment, preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian language, culture and arts. • Promotion of educational interest in the Hawaiian language throughout the community. • Provision of consultants and resource persons based on life experience. • Establishment of educational scholarships. Any kupuna interested in sharing in the educational

efforts of Ka Leo O Na Kupuna ln., are invited to join the organization. Kupuna involved in the cassette are Elizabeth Nalani Ellis, Agnes Kainoa Wright, Lilia Hale, Thelma Kamala Field and Mae Kaleo. A booklet was also printed along with the tape so that anyone using the tape ean listen to the spoken Hawaiian language and then practice repeating it aloud The tape and booklet sells as a set for $10 with proceeds to be used for educational projects and/or a scholarship fund.
