DOE Will Continue Hawaiian Language

The Hawaiian Language Immersion pilot project started last school year at two public schools will be continued in the 1988-89 school year, according to an announcement from the State Department of Education. The two project sites are at Waiau Elementary School in the Leeward O'ahu District and at Keaukaha Elementary School in Hilo, Hawaii District. Enrollment is open only to incoming kindergarten students. Parents interested in enrolling incoming kindergarten children in either of these two programs should notify these schools as soon as possible to register for September. All instruction in these classes will be conducted in the Hawaiian language. According to the DOE announcement, there are no current plans to offer the immersion program in any other school district. However, if sufficient interest and enrollment are expressed (approximately 20 kindergarten students), consideration may be given to opening up another class. Parents interested in the program are asked to eall the school district superintendent and to provide information as to what year your child would enter kindergarten.
