Foundation Handles Six Scholarship Funds

Students of Hawai'i who need financial assistance to continue their education ean seek scholarships through the Hawai'i Community Foundation, whieh represents six scholarship funds. Deadline for app!ication is March 1, 1989. The Hawaii Community Foundation is the administrator for six separate scholarship trust funds: the Aiea General Hospital Association Scholarship; Juliette M. Atherton Scholarship; Ka'iulani Home for Girls Trust; Hawai'i Veterans Memonal Fund; Manon Maccarrell Scott Scholarship; and the Dr. Hans and Clara Zimmerman Foundation. Scholarships are derived from the earned ineome from the invested assets of eaeh fund, and are made available for grants to various colleges and universities in Hawai'i and on the mainland. Scholarships range in size from $100 to several thousand dollars, depending on the individual

fund. Students should also plan to apply for finaneial aid from the college you expect to attend, as well as through state and federal sources, bank loans, merit awards or scholarships from civic clubs and community organizations. To be eligible to apply to the Hawai'i Community Foundation you must: 1) be a resident of the State of Hawai'i 2) plan to attend an accredited two or four-year college or university 3) intend to take at least the minimum number of credits required to maintain status as a full-time, regular student

4) demontrate financial need 5) meet a standard of academic performance 6) be a person of sufficiently good character and motivation. Applicants may not be directly related to employees of Bancorp Hawai'i, nor may they have been a Bancorp Hawai'i employee in the past two years. In addition to the criteria listed above, eaeh individual fund has its own requirements. The Foundation has copies of an information booklet and application form, whieh also lists some additional finaneial programs whieh a student might qualify for.
