La Hoʻolu ʻOlelo— Hawaiian Language Day To Be Held Feb. 18

"La Ho'olu 'Olelo Hawai'i," Hawaiian language day, is an annual event that since it began in 1981, has continued to grow in popularity at Kaua'i Community College. Up to 200 enthusiastic teachers, students and speakers of the Hawaiian language are expected to attend this year's event on Saturday, February 18 at the KCC Campus Center. As many as 150 may be coming from other islands.

According to La Ho'olu 'Olelo Hawai'i organizing committee member Hokulani Cleeland, highlights include a slide show/talk by Frances Hali'a Frazier on "Pi'ilani Ko'olau: Profile Of Courage." Frazier translated the memoirs of Pi'ilani, wife of Kaluaiko'olau, also known as Ko'olau the Leper, and will present this well-known Kaua'i story of courage. Keahi Maneo of the state Department of Health on Kaua'i, will share health lessons developed for the Punana Leo Hawaiian language immersion preschools.

There will be conversation groups, competition among language students, door prizes, team games including Hawaiian bingo, hana keaka (charades), a Hawaiian-language version of "Win, Lose Or Draw," a kukala (auction), group presentations, and closing ceremonies. Master of ceremonies will be Moses K. Keale, Sr., OHA Trustee, Kaua'i. Keale, a native of Ni'ihau and a fluent speaker, has played this role since the first La Ho'olu 'Olelo Hawai'i. Next year will mark 10 years that this lively and engaging program has been boosting use of Hawaii's native language.

Admission is $5 per adult and $3 for children and high school students. Registration eheek-in begins at 8 a.m. Advance registration by February 10 is recommended, said Cleeland, to make sure there is enough food for everyone (a Hawaiian luneh will be served). To register, send in your eheek payable to "La Ho'olu 'Olelo Hawai'i," along with your full name, mailing address, day and/or evening phone numbers, date of birth, and group affiliation.
