Sharing their aloha and mana'o with their fellow kupuna at the "Ho'oulu I Ka 'Olelo Makuahine" conference were (clockwise from upper left): • Kupuna Rachel Mahuiki, a native of Kaua'i who now lives on O'ahu, was named a "living treasure" last year by her home island. She has been kahu for the 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu for many years. A native speaker of Hawaiian, she was part of the NHOAP kupuna group at the conference. She is the mother of entertainer Kawai Cockett. • Kupuna Henry Nala'ielua, who hails from the Hamakua coast, has been a longtime resident of Kalaupapa, Molo-

ka'i. He travels frequently to speak about life at Kalaupapa and the history of the settlement there. • Kupuna David Kupule, a friend of Nala'ielua onee lived at Kalaupapa with his family. He now lives on O'ahu. • Kupuna Dora Swain is a DOE kupuna on Kaua'i. She has an extensive background in music, is well-traveled, and comes from a kama'aina paniolo family. • Kupuna Lurline Lee, a teacher at Leilehua high school, poses with her cousin. • Kupuna Barbara Pua'a, a kupuna in the DOE Leeward district. Both are from Wahiawa, and were pioneers in the civic club movement in their area.
