Vote count due

Nearly 28,000 ballots were returned by mid-January to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in the single definition referendum. Ballots were sent out on Dec. 5, 1989 to 63,969 registered OHA voters in Hawai'i. Replacement ballots and newvoters'ballots went out the week of Jan. 15. To be counted, a voter's return ballot had to be postmarked no later than midnight, Jan. 25, the day this issue of Ka Wai Ola OHA was printed. At press time it was expected the results of the vote would be announced Jan. 30. The March issue of Ka Wai Ola O OHA will carry full details of the vote results. The referendum was mandated by the state legislature whieh provided the funding. Approximately 6,000 ballots were returned to OHA because the forwarding order has expired or because there was no forwarding address or because the addressee was deceased. People who did not receive a referendum ballot should eheek to see if they are currently OHA-registered voters. People should be sure they are registered to vote by their county clerk's office if they want to vote in the federal, state and OHA elections. When registering to vote, people who want to get an OHA ballot must sign on/y in block 10 of the voter registration affidavit. Signing in two places may invalidate the registration.
