150 years of Hawaiian education celebration plans are underway

On Oct. 15, 1840, King Kamehameha III signed legislation enabling establishment of a ministry of education for the kingdom. His action initiated Hawaii's public education system. The 150th anniversary observance of public education in Hawai'i (1840-1990) is being organized by a 32-member governor's commission. The commission has selected Duane Feekin, a senior vice-president with Bank of Hawai'i, as chairman and Gael Mustapha, of the department of education communication's branch, as vicechairman. The commission has approved a red and yellow logo for the celebration, designed by commissionmember Momi Cazimero. "On Wings Of Discovery" is the theme selected for the observance to be held July 1990 through June 1991. More information may be obtained by calling celebration coordinators Mary Tanouye and Ramona Mullahey at 548-7203.
