Making an arts, crafts business profit

"Planning For Profits" is a workshop designed to teach creative people, artists, craftspeople and fashion designers how to get a fair wage for their work, set business goals, determine the cost of production, gather financial information and keep more of the profits they earned. The workshop is tax-deductible and the $50 fee includes all material, luneh, and other refreshments. The fee for registration after the deadline is $65. The workshop includes an overview on Friday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. followed by an allday workshop Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The course is sponsored by the University of Hawai'i Cooperative Extension Service. Those interested in taking the course may contact any county extension agent for more information and scholarship availability. Speakers at the workshop will be Joan Blackshear, Linda Cox, PhD, and Jean Williams. Blackshear is a designer whose silk designs are sold in prestigious department stores nationwide. She is also a consultant to the fashion industry. Cox is a business management specialist and market researcher with UH-Manoa. Williams is a consultant to the state's Department of Business and Eeonomie Development. She is responsible for Hawaii's program to assist artists, craftspeople and fashion designers in marketing their products. She owns and operates her own pottery business. Workshops are scheduled as follows: Hawai'i — The registration deadline is Feb. 23 for March 2-3 workshop at Hilo, the University Agriculture Complex, second floor conference room. Kaua'i — The registration deadline is March 2 for the March 9-10 workshop in Lihue at the Community College dining room. The contact person is Masako Ohama at 245-4471. Maui — The deadline was Jan. 26 for a Feb. 2-3 workshop at Kahului in the Community College Service Building 205. For late-registration information eall Lynn Nakamura at 244-3242. Moloka'i — The deadline is Feb. 16 for the Feb. 23-24 workshop at Kaunakakai at the Mitchell Pauole Center. The contact person is Ann Fontes at 567-6698. O'ahu will have two workshops. The deadline is Feb. 2 for the Feb. 9-10 workshop in Honolulu at the UH Campus Center Ba!lroom on the Manoa campus. The contact person is Pamela Kutara at 948-7212. The deadline is Feb. 9 for the Feb. 16-17 workshop in Pearl City at the Leeward Community College. The contact person is Pamela Kutara at 9487212. Confirmation will be sent to registrants including a map and a checklist of materials whieh should be brought to the workshop. Space is limited and early registration is recommended. Cancellations made less than seven days before the workshop will be charged a $15 cancellation fee. No refunds will be granted after class begins. If the class is cancelled, for any reason, all fees will be refunded and registrants will be notified of the eancellation at least seven days before the workshop was to begin.
