Now out: Maui cemetery directory

A directory of over 6,000 tombstone inscriptions from historic graveyards in Maui County has recently been published and is available to the public statewide. The directory, whieh also contains location maps and historical data about individual graveyards on Maui, Lana'i and Moloka'i, was compiled by the Cemetery Research Project for the Maui Historical Society to help people locate family grave sites and preserve valuable historical data. According to Cemetery Research Project director, Nanette Napoleon Pumell, the project took two years to complete and involved over a dozen field workers and research assistants who labored through adverse conditions to locate sites and record the inscriptions. "The magnitude of this project was enormous . . . finding sites took a lot of detective work, and reading old inscriptions was quite difficult at times," said Pumell. "The whole project would have never been possible without the help of all the dedicated volunteers who labored diligently to get the job done." Copies of the directory are available at selected I 4 «
