Kupuna program update

Programs for the elderly organized through Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna at Alu Like, ine. kept na kupuna around the islands busy traveling and meeting old friends through the spring months. Hilo is the first site of Self Care Training, a program from the University of Hawaii (UH) School of Public Health and organized by Dr. Larry Koseki and Sue Reid. Kupunas on the Big Island participated in the Native American Cultural Exchange at Mo'oheau Park and took a field trip to Laupahoehoe Point where they learned about the history and towns along the route. The Anahola Clubhouse on Kaua'i has received three new staff members: outreach workers Bernica Kaopio and Paula lida, and Activity assistant Forrest Cole. Kaopio previously worked with for three years for the Kaua'i Eeonomie Opportunity Program in the elderly nutrition program and at the UH Cooperative Extension Service, education nutrition program. Kupuna on Moloka'i also have been busy with a trip to Maui for an eagerly anticipated exchange of ideas and talent strengthening the close

relationship between Maui and Moloka'i. Moloka'i kupuna Alexander Bishaw and volunteer Althea lona captured the First Lady Lynne Waihee's outstanding volunteer awards in the adult and senior categories and traveled to Washington Plaee. And this month and in August, Moloka'i fisherman James Kili Mawae will be joined by Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna O Moloka'i during the akule run. On O'ahu, the Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna staff has grown with the addition of Nicholas Pimental, outreach worker, Annette Mapuana Ringler, activities assistant, and Francine Pahia, van driver. The O'ahu kupuna visited Queen Emma's Summer Palaee and 'lolani Palaee as well as He'eia State Park and took a boat cruise along the shore of Kaneohe Bay. Nutritionist Liz Meahl has made several additions to the Ke Ola Pono including some cultural favorites. A resident of Olahu's North Shore, Meahl has traveled to all the sites receiving feedback from kupuna and providing nutrition education.
