Mount Olomana now protected

The new Conservation District land use rules reclassifying Mount Olomana, O'ahu, into the protective subzone become effective Dec. 5. The Board of Land and Natural Resources voted unanimously to plaee the slopes of Mount Olomana in the protective subzone following an Oct. 9 public hearing in Windward O'ahu. Mount Olomana previously was in the general subzone, whieh designates open space as land where specific conservation issues may not be defined but urban land use would be premature. The protective subzone is the most restrictive of the Conservation District lands. It protects

valuable resources in such designated areas as restricted watersheds; marine, plant, and wildlife sanctuaries; significant historic, archaeological, geological and volcanic features and sites; and other areas of scenic and cultural values. The board action was approved by Gov. John Waihee. "The protective subzone is our most pristine subzone. The board consistently has not allowed even residential development in this subzone," said William Paty, director and chairman of the board of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
