Women's Fund announces grants

The Women's Fund of Hawai'i has awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline, a non-profit component of the Hawai'i Women Lawyers Fund. Rai St. Chu is hotline chair; Nanei Kreidman is executive director. Linnel Nishioka heads the Hawai'i Women Lawyers. The grant will be used to fund a workshop on domestic abuse, "Let the Truth Be Known," to take plaee during the legislative session. The workshop is to facilitate advanced communitywide discussion on issues related to domestic abuse. Presenters will be Sara Buehl, a Harvard Law School graduate and former battered woman; and Ellen Penee, of the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, "a program renowned nationwide," Kreidman says, "for its progressive and responsive intervention." "The family-related homicide rate has been increasing quite steadily in Hawai'i," Kreidman adds. "Out of these tragedies comes the opportunity to re-evaluate our system response and improve our potential to protect survivors, sanction perpetrators, and rehabilitate families for whom violenee is a problem." The Women's Fund of Hawai'i was established in 1989 to create an expanding financial resource permanently dedicated to helping women and girls and to increase, not replace, existing sources of funding for women's programs. Contributions have eome from both women and men; donor/members currently stand at nearly 100. This grant is the first from the Women's Fund; potential uses include domestic violence, women's health, grant preparation for immigrant women, and assistance in role modeling and peer counselling. The Women's Fund also prepares reports on priorities affecting women and girls in Hawai'i; reports on women and AIDS and reproductive rights have recently been issued and two more are expected.
