Hawaiians should fill positions open in Clinton Administration

Hawaiians should apply for work with President B i 11 Clinton. Noelle Kahanu, staff counsel for the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs, said Clinton's transition team has been soliciting resumes in Indian Country, and this may indicate a willingness to give Hawaiian applicants a second look as well.

"There are over a thousand political appointments whieh will be filled by the Clinton Administration in the ensuing months-positions ranging from within the Department of Interior and the Department of Housing and Urban Development to the Civil Rights Commission and the National Foundation on the Arts and

Humanities. These positions ean be found in the Plum Book of Policy and Supporting Positions, copies of whieh ean be found in eaeh of the Congressional offices." Resumes ean be sent to Gov. Richard Riley, Presidential Transition Office, 1120 Vermont Ave. NW, 1 lth Floor, Washington, D.C. 20270.

If Hawaiians ean find jobs in the policy-making branches of the federal govemment, it will help Hawaiians in general. Said Kahanu, "Stances taken by past administrations whieh have been detrimental to the Hawaiian community were perhaps a reflection of the level of ignorance of political appointees. Native Hawaiians

now have an opportunity to apply for these very same positions. It would be extremely beneficial for Hawaiians to occupy some of these positions so as to assist both the Hawaiian community and to educate the Clinton Administration."
