OHA funds provide tutoring to public school students

by Jeff Clark Thanks to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, during this school year 38 island public schools are sharing $196,274 to fund tutorial projects. The money was allotted to the OHA education division's budget by the state Legislature, and eaeh school has

set up its own program. In the past OHA primarily funded tutorials for high school students in danger of not graduating, but several years ago OHA began funding tutorials for younger students in hopes they counld avoid that kind of academie trouble by strengthening

their academic skills. Says OHA education specialist Ka'iulani Vincent, "Funding tutorial programs is just one of the ways that we ean assist the students." The funding for tutorials has grown tremendously. During 1991-92, 15 schools shared just

over $36,000. In previous years only four or five schools applied for and received funds. Vincent hopes the Legislature will provide as mueh or more funding for 1993-94 as it did for this year. The purpose of the funds, whieh went to schools on every major island, is to help students

do grade-level work and/or be promoted, to graduate with a 2.0-or-better grade point average, and to improve test scores and attitudinal ratings. These are the schools that received OHA tutoring money this year:
