Establishmmt of the Offce of Hawaiian Affairs ( OHA ) by the 1978 Constitutional Convention was afirst step toward righting the wrongs that began with the overthrow of the Hawaiian nation in 1893. OHA is charged with developing educational and advocacy programs to sustain the stmgglefor Hawaiian justice. The 'Io, or Hawaiian Hawk, symbolizes the Hawaiian spirit to win that struggle — unafraid, strong and eapahle of soaring to great heights. (Mahalo to artist Patrick Chingfor use of his image of an 'Io.) The centennial commemoration of the overthrow is past,

but the struggleforjustice continues. Another major step in i redressing the harms of more than a century ago eame in the I U.S. apology to the Native Hawaiian people. In this apology resolution, ihe U.S. formally recognized its illegal involvement in the overthrow. But many more steps will be needed before justice tridy is done. That's why, as Native Hawaiians and Americans, we need your help and support. The determination and basic goodness to achievejustice is embodied in the American spirit and the Aloha spirit. By working together, for eaeh other, andforjustice, we will prevail.
