Prince Kūhiō song and essay contest winners announced

Aha Haku Mele O Maunakea, ine. announces the following winners of the 4th annual Prince Kūhiē Song and Essay Contest. The award program was held at Nānāikapono Elementary school cafeteria on Mar. 1 8 and featured Nānākuli students reading their essay responses to one of the following questions: "What does living (or going to school) on the Hawaiian homestead lands mean to me?" "What is the importance of Prince Kūhiō's legacy and/or "Why is Nānākuli a

special plaee to live?" Grand prize winner of a Sonny D 'ukulele was Keoni Ezell, 10, who lives on Nānākuli homestead. Along with an essay, Keoni sang two songs composed by kupuna Katherine Maunakea whieh honor Kūhiō and his legacy, "Nā Kūhiō Mai," and "Aloha Ku'u 'Āina Ho'opulapula." Essay contest winners were: first plaee, Christopher Souza; second plaee, Joustine McCoy; third plaee, Anika Hopfe. Prizes included a savings bond, books, Tamura

Supermarket food certificates and movie passes. All other participants received certificates of recognition for their effort. Judges were Dr. Dorothy Douthit, Doreen Lindsey and Analika Nahulu. Special speakers were Dixon Stroup and Hoaliku Drake. Music was provided by nā haumana of Katherine K. Maunakea, founder and president of Aha Haku Mele O Maunakea, contest sponsor.
