Nā Pua Noʻeau expands

Nā Pua No'eau, the Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children, has expanded to Kaua'i. Based at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, the Center expanded to Maui and Kaua'i earlier this year because of funding by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The Kaua i program is based at Kaua'i Community College and is run by administrator Dennis Chun and coordinators Althea Arinaga and Healani Shim. They aim to share with Garden Isle families Nā Pua No'eau programs to enhanee talent, develop selfesteem, provide student and parent support services and to integrate native Hawaiian values and culture utilizing Kaua'i's unique community resources. Community response has been very positive, according to Nā Pua No'eau director David Sing, with families, community leaders and other resources stepping forward to begin planning for Super Enrichment Saturdays. OHA education officer Rona Rodenhurst says OHA funded the program's neighbor island expansion because„ "Nā Pua No'eau was only in Hilo, and it's a gifted and talented program, so therefore it should be available to other students statewide."
