Hawaiian input needed for forest recovery plan

The mana'o of six working groups made up of community members, scientists and forestry officials concemed about preserving forests of Hawai'i, will be available this month for a 30-day public review and comment period. Their findings and recommendations are in a draft action plan of the Hawai'i Tropical Forest Recovery Task Force. For a copy of the draft action plan contact the task force coordinator Jan Lerum at 522-8233, 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 323, Honolulu Hawai'i 96813. In March the working groups visited

forests statewide and held community meetings to seek community input for developing a forestry management plan. Hawaiians were especially invited to share mana'o on access to the forest for gathering as well as how to preserve and perpetuate native plants in the forest. The mission of the Hawai'i Tropical Forest Recovery Task Force is to develop strategies for the long-term management, protection and utilization of the existing and potential forest resources of Hawai'i.
