Summer festival features films by Pacific lslanders

Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) will hold its first annual Festival of Indigenous Pacific Islander Films and Videos, July 21-24 on O'ahu. Hawai'i and Maui. The festival includes a workshop with Merata Mita on "Cultural Copyright" on Saturday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at UHMānoa Kuykendall hall room 204; and a panel discussion the same day at 7 p.m. on "The Indigenous Esthetic" with the filmmakers at UH-Mānoa Art Building auditorium. Fee for workshop and panel discussion is S4general.$3 seniors. Lurline McGregor, PIC execuiive director says, "In addition to bringing these 11 ilms and videos to the general puhlie we especially want Hawaiians and other irtdigenous Pacific Islanders to have an opportunity to see images of ourselves that have been created bv our Pacific Islan(ter relatives. "Back to the Roots," co-producers Dana Naone Hall and Victoria Keith (Hawai'i). Documentary on taro-growers in modem-day Hawai'i and their efforts to preserve this traditional crop and lifestyle.
