» : 1 Pictured above are participants in Project Esteem, a fourweek effort designed to build the self-esteem of homeiess native Hawaiian youth through a program of supervised work study and recreation. The program, initiated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, took plaee on Coconut lsiand in Kāne'ohe Bay through the support of Hachidai USA, and the youth worked at and received training in construction, maintenance, landscaping and gardening under the supervision of Kahala Construction. The 'ōpio made $8 an hour and were required to open a savings account and return to their families with the money they earned. Sisters of Saint Joseph provided academic training and OHA housing division volunteer Loveii Kaleikini was on hand daily to provide Hawaiian cultural education and generai kōkua.
