Na kuleana a ka Papa Kahu waiwai The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board of Trustees held its regu!ar monthly business meeting Sept. 27 at the Kala'iakamanu Hou Church Hall in Kaunakakai,

Moloka'i. All trustees were present save for Trustees Keale and Kanahele, who were absent. Ka Hā Mai Kalāhikiola Nāli'i'elua Award The trustees voted to present the Ka Hā Mai Kalāhikiola Nāli'i'elua Award to Kupuna Katherine Maunakea. It is one of three kupuna treasure awards presented at OHA's annual 'Aha Kūpuna; the other two are chosen by conference participants and OHA's kūpuna team. Land & Sovereignty Trustee Kīna'u Boyd Kamali'i reported on the activities of the Hawaiian Sovereignty Elections Council, OHA and other organizations were asked to make nominations to fill vacancies. HSEC's executive committee received the nominations and will submit the names to the govemor for appointment. Although the HSEC plans to allow Hawaiians living on the Mainland and Hawaiians convicted and incarcerated to vote in the Januar> 1996 HSEC plebiscite, several trustees disagreed. Chairman Hee asked Kamali'i to report the trustees' mana'o to HSEC. The Board voted to withdraw from the Anderson vs. Beck kuleana case, following OHA policy to withdraw from any kuleana case if heirs are found." The Board also voted to withdraw from the Nekota vs. Naihe kuleana case. V ideo Taping of BOT Meetings & Kealoha Request Re: AG Report The trustees discussed at length a public access televīsion program about the Board of Trustees. The Budget, Finance and Policy Committee was assigned to develop a policy on videotaping. The trustees also discussed the Attorney GeneraTs report regarding the selection of OHA's administrator. Community Concerns Moloka'i resident Kaeo Matthew Adolpho, Sr. asked for the trustees to kōkua the people of the island in their fight over the transfer of water from the East End to developments on the West End. Ad Hoe Committee on Entitlements Under the agenda item "Land Acquisitions," the Board voted unanimously for funding of up to $30,000 to hire a land attomey to ensure that OHA's interests are protected in transactions between OHA and the State project. The attomey will reviēw documents related to the possible acquisition of the Waikīkī Yacht Club site and a parcel in the vicinity of Sand Island. The Board voted unanimously to add language to a letter of agreement reached in principle with the state Housing Finance & Development Corporation in August in regard to the Villages of Leali'i project. Part of the property is ceded lands, and the new language states that by allowing HFDC to build on the land and aeeepīing payment on the land, OHA would not be admitting that the state has the right to sell ceded lands or waiving any claims on land by Hawaiians.
