"Papa" Henry Auwae receives HVB's Hō Mai Ka ʻlke grant

• The Hawai'i Visitors Bureau and Governor John Waihe'e have awarded HVB's Hō Mai Ka 'Ike grant to "Papa" Henry Auwae, a renowned scholar and practitioner of lā'au lapa'au. "This award is very significant in that it represents Papa Henry's eommitment to maintaining the ways and methods of our ancestors and applying these teachings to assist the science of modern heakh care," Waihe'e said in making the presentation. Auwae, who lives in Keaukaha on the island of Hawai'i, is a recognized resource in the ancient Hawaiian practices of healing through the spirit, art and science of diagnosis, pharmacology, and treatment. He is active in integrating the Westem and Hawaiian medical techniques and practices as part of his teaching and resource responsibilities at the Queen's Medical Center and on the Big Island.

In addition to treating all those who seek his aid, Auwae shares his knowledge with a number of students locally and actively works with indigenous healers throughout the Pacific basin from the Pacific Northwest to New Zealand. The unrestricted $10,000 grant, contributed by loeal businesses, was created as part of the HVB's Keep it Hawai'i program and is intended to recognize loeal men and women who have committed their time and efforts to the study and per-' petuation of Hawaiian eultural knowledge for the people of Hawai'i.

As one of his last official acts, Governor John Waihe'e presents the Hō Mai Ka 'lke $10,000 grant to lā'au lapa'au practitioner "Papa" Henry Auwae.
