Hawaiian burials hearings scheduled

Statewide hearings on proposed rules regarding the proper care and treatment of Hawaiian burial sites and ancestral remains have been scheduled for late January and early February. In response to the removal of 1,100 ancestral native Hawaiian remains from Honokahua, a law was enacted in 1990 providing additional protection to Hawaiian burial sites. Based on this law, the rules address issues including burial eouneil duties, physieal examination, photography of iwi, and recognition of lineal descendants. Department of Land and Natural Resources is encouraging Hawaiians to testify at the hearings. Interested persons may eall the historic preservation division office at 587-0047 to get a copy of the rules.
