Pepeluali is Hawaiian language month

Gov. Ben Cayetano has proclaimed February, er, Pepeluali, to be Hawaiian Language Month. 'Ahahui 'Olelo Hawai'i (the private, non-profit Hawaiian language association) will present a variety of activities open to anyone, from the most proficient of fluent speakers down to those of us who don't know an 'āholehole from an 'okole. Events include: Lā Kūkahekahe, 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Feb. 4 at the UH-Mānoa Campus Center Ballroom. This is a student-oriented Hawaiianlanguage day of games, cultural demonstrations, speech eompe'titions, an auehon, and meeting new friends. Admission is $4; registration required.

Ho'omau '95, concert Feb. 1 1 at the Waikīkī Shell benefitting Hawaiian language immersion programs and featuring Auntie Genoa Keawe, the Ka'au Crater Boys & Robi Kahakalau, Hālau Kawaili'ulā, Mākaha Sons, Kaipo Hale, Ho'okena and more. Reserved seating is $12.25; it's $10.25 to sit on the grass. (This event is not sponsored by 'Ahahui 'Olelo Hawai'i.) Lā 'Ohana, "family day" at Kapi'olani Park: a festival of Hawaiian language bringing together Hawaiian speakers, raising awareness about the Hawaiian language, and offering opportunities to learn and use more Hawaiian language.
