More sovereignty symposiums are needed

by Samuel L. Kealoha, Jr. Trustee, Moloka'i and Lāna'i I'd like to express my pleasure in attending the recent sovereignty workshop at the Hale Koa Hotel on Monday, February 20, 1995. It was very informative and well attended by native Hawaiians as well as the general public, including four trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. There were five very qualified, eloquent speakers who gave speeches on different forms of sovereignty. Kīna'u Boyd Kamali'i, trustee for the

Office of Hawaiian Affairs, spoke about a "state within a state."

Herbert Holt Kauhi from the Kingdom of Hawai'i expressed the Kingdom's views on independence. Paul Neves, Lukanela Kia'aina of Ka Lāhui Hawai'i, described "nation within a nation. Miehael Hansen from the Hawai'i Home Rule Party shared the party's views on free association.

Judge Edward King, representative for native Hawaiian beneficiaries in the

Hawaiian home lands settlement, covered constitutional and judicial considerations. Mahalo to all. It was a privilege introducing the keynote speaker for the day, the Honorable Mililani B. Trask. As I stated in my opening statement, this is the kind of leadership we need in these trying times. 1 believe there is an urgent

need for more symposiums for sovereignty before the deplorable plebiscite sleazes itself, (HSEC) back to life. On behalf of Ka Lāhui Hawai'i. Mililani presented its master plan for review and comments. I have already received phone calls from as far away as the Mainland requesting copies of the master plan. I compliment the Ka Lāhui Hawai'i eommittee that organized this event. I also say mahalo to Pono Kaulike, ine. for sponsoring this "Symposium for Sovereignty."
