KHET series continues on Pacific voyaging

1 Students in Hawai'i and across the country are tracing the voy- | I age of the Hawai'iloa and Hōkūle'a canoes to the South Pacific j and back to Hawai'i, through an interactive television series pro- j j duced by the state Department of Education Distance Leaming j j Technology (ital)KidScience(end ital) program and KHET. j j In cooperation with the Pacific Mountain Network, the series is j j following the canoes and their crews with live broadcasts via j j radio, telephones and computers. A teacher's guide with interdis- j ciplinary activities was developed and sent to interested instruc- j tors. Students in fourth through sixth-grades are leaming about the j accomplishments of Polynesian wayfinders as the canoes and j their crews replicate the original voyages of Pacific exploration by using traditional non-instrument navigation, eating traditional j foods, and sailing canoes made from natural materials in the tra- j ditional way. In May, KHET will broadcast four programs on Fridays from j 8:15 to 9 a.m., to conclude a seven-part series that began last j month. • May 5, "Life on the Canoe," about survival and daily life on a I eanoe for a month • May 12, "Marine Ecology," about marine life the canoes j encounter at sea, fishing techniques, environmental and pollution j problems; • May 19, "Exploration," about the dangers and risks of the joumey, and comparisons with wayfinders in other parts of the world; and finally • May 26, "Recapping the Voyage." Crew members will share their experience of the voyage and answer students' questions.
