King Kamehameha Day Celebrations scheduled statewide

For the 123rd time, the people of Hawai'i will celebrate the life and accomplishments of the legendary warrior king who united the islands: Kamehameha the Great. The celebration will be held June 10 on O'ahu, Moloka'i, Kaua'i and in KailuaKona: Maui's celebration will be held June 7. The King Kamehameha Day Celebration was established by King Kamehameha V in honor of his grandfather and was first held on June 1 1. 1872. The statewide theme, "Keali'i Pauahi no Kamehameha: A Legacy Remembered," is a tribute to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop and her vision. On O'ahu, the 79th annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of King and Richards Streets. It will proceed Diamond Head on King Street, ma kai on Punchbowl Street, and Diamond Head on Ala Moana Boulevard, then merge onto Kalākaua Avenue and end on Monsarrat in Queen Kapi'olani Park. The parade will include mounted units, five marching bands from the Mainland. decorated vehicles, floral floats. and militaiy units. Kamehameha the Great on a float created by the Prince Kūhiō Civic Club. Henry Ku'ualoha Giugni, a federal lobbyist and the only Hawaiian to ever serve as Sergeant-at-Arms in the U.S. Congress, will serve as the grand marshal. Shirley Kukana Kawehiwehionalani Smith Brenner is the Pā'ū Queen. Demonstrations and displays of traditional Hawaiian arts and crafts ean be seen at Kapi'olani Park from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Entertainment and a parade awards ceremony will take plaee at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand. Give "The Lonely One" a lei Lei measuring more than 26 feet long will be draped on the statue of Kamehameha the Great in front of 'Ali'iolani Hale in downtown Honolulu. All organizations, Hawaiian and nonHawaiian alike, are encouraged to bring strung-but-untied lei to the statue on the morning of June 9. Loose flowers, especially plumeria, may be dropped off for stringing by volunteers. Anyone wishing to help string lei ean stop by between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Ceremonies will include musical presentations, and the ehanee to watch the statue "eome alive" with beautiful floral tributes.
