‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu celebrates 90 years

The 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu Ke Po'o Chapter I, a Hawaiian benevolent society founded in memory of Kuhina Nui Ka'ahumanu, celebrates its 90th anniversary this month. The public is invited to attend a banquet on Saturday, June 17 from 6-10:30 p.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel Hibiscus Ballroom. Tickets are $40 per person and reservations may be made in advance by calling Mary Ann Hutchinson at 1(808) 949-8317. The society was originally founded on Aug. 8, 1864 at Kawaiaha'o Church by Princess Victoria Kamāmalu. Upon her death, the society was disbanded. It was reinstated in 1905. OHA Trustee Kīna'u Kamali'i, a member of the society, described the 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu as "providing a continuing link within families and within the larger community. Hawaiians onee compared their family lines not to the branches of a tree," she said, "but to a walking back and forth on the same path." Today, members of the 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu, as well as other benevolent societies, continue to walk that path.
